Update : 16 Jan 2014, 01:27 PM

The motorcade of the preceding government’s home minister, MK Alamgir, came under attack in Kachua upazila, Chandpur on Thursday afternoon.

Police said Alamgir’s vehicle and two others were vandalized, they suspected that Jamaat-e-Islami, Hefazat-e-Islam and the BNP were behind the attack.

About 15 people, including policemen, were injured at the scene, Kachua Police Station Officer-in-Charge Alamgir Hossain said.

Witnesses said Jamaat, Hefazat-e-Islam and BNP supporters in the crowd attacked Alamgir when he was attending an Islamic gathering in Ujani madrassa sometime near 5pm.

They said the former home minister was assaulted at the scene while the attackers kept chanting the slogan “Naraye Takbir.”

Abdur Rhaman, an authority of the madrassa, said none of his madrassa men were involved in the attack. “This was pre-planned, we condemn this attack.”

Chandpur police Assistant Superintendent Abu Hanif said a portion of the crowd got excited during the programme. MK Alamgir was leaving the premises when they smashed three cars, including that of the former home minister.

Chandpur police Superintendent Amir Zafar said he had heard about the incident. “Jamaat, Hefazat and BNP men might be involved. Steps will be taken after investigation.”
