50 injured in Habiganj clash

Some 50 people were injured in an altercation between two village groups in Baniyachang upazila, Habiganj on the afternoon of Thursday.

Of those injured, 20 were rushed to Habiganj Sadar Hospital while seven were sent to Sylhet Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Police and witnesses said there was a longstanding dispute between Liton Mia of North Sangor Village and Salauddin of the nearby village of Ikram over establishing some form of supremacy over the other.

Both groups engaged each other in a clash over the matter using makeshift weapons in the afternoon.

On information police rushed to the scene and fired 40 rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Habiganj Assistant Police Super (north) Nazmul Islam confirmed the matter, saying: “We rushed to the spot and fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.”
