At least 30 were injured in a tripartite clash between the workers of Sadarghat Launch Terminal, South Plaza Market and the police in the capital’s Sadarghat on Monday.

Among the injured, four were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, 16 to Mitford Hospital while the rest were sent to various other hospitals and clinics within the area.

The area turned into a battlefield when several hundred workers from both the sides engaged each other.

“The clash was over a longstanding feud over a monitory deal between two traders of the South Plaza Market. Both groups were called at the police station for a solution, but at one stage of the meeting people from both sides charged at each other from inside the police station”, he said.

He said: “When the unruly few butted heads and left five policemen injured, the law enforcers went into action by charging at them with batons and firing guns.”

Law enforcers detained four individuals from the spot.

Sources said the police fired some 100 rounds of bullets to bring the situation under control.

The SI said: “Many people sustained injuries in the clash and the injured were rushed to various hospitals and clinics.”

Following the clash, several markets and business establishments within the area were shut down while the activity at the launch terminal were suspended.
