Lawyers, policemen hurt in blasts

At least five people, including lawyers and policemen, were injured in separate explosions at the Old Dhaka in the capital on Sunday afternoon.

The incident took place during a nationwide blockade programme of the BNP-led 18-party alliance.

Lawyers Uzzal Sarker, 32, Sirajul Islam, 26, and a police constable Mohammad Hassan were injured in blasts near the Judges’ Court area around 2:30pm.

In a separate incident, two crude bombs exploded near Jagannath University leaving traffic constable Abul Bashar injured at around 12noon.

All the injured persons were first admitted to nearby National Medical College and Hospital and later shifted to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

Kotwali police Officer-in-Charge Salauddin Ahmed said the law enforcers were trying to identify the criminals responsible for the blasts.

Abul Bashar was rushed to Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital, Kotwali police Sub Inspector Rezaul Karim said. “Police fired several blank shots during the blasts.”

Meanwhile, police detained one Kawsar Ahmed, 34, in suspicion over blasts carried out in Badda area around 10am in the morning, Badda police OC MA Jalil said.
