Update : 11 Jan 2014, 04:52 PM

A recklessly driven bus ran over a woman in the capital’s Dhanmondi area on Saturday night.

The deceased was identified as Sufiya Begum, 55, of Moneshwar Road in Hajaribagh.

A recklessly driven bus knocked and ran over Sufiya while she was crossing the road in front of Lab Aid Hospital around 7:30pm.

The accident took place while Sufiyan was returning home after visiting one of her daughters in Mirpur.

Hospital’s security guards Md Shimul and Shahid Miah rushed her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a critical condition where doctor declared her dead after some time.

Police and locals chased the bus and seized it although the driver fled.

Witness Shimul and Shahid told the Dhaka Tribune that a New Market-bound bus hit the woman while she was crossing the road immediately after she got down from another bus.

“Soon after the bus hit the woman, she skidded off on the road and then the bus ran over her”, Shimul said and added, “She just told her name and address and died on the way to the DMCH.”

Sheikh Abu Saleh Muhammad, officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station, said the bus was seized but its driver and his helper escaped the arrest.
