Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation will operate special bus services from January 21 to February 3, for the participants of Bishwa Ijtema - the second largest Muslim gathering in the world.
Communication Minister Obaidul Quader informed the media on Saturday while visiting the Ijtema road (Tongi-Bypass-Kamarpara).
The minister went on a sudden visit to observe the real condition of the road and progress of its maintenance work. Bishwa Ijtema will be starting on January 24 at Tongi’s Ijtema yard.
The state owned transport agency will provide at least 300 BRTC buses for carrying the participants to the Ijtema yard from different places of the country and return them back to the places they came from.
The Roads and Highway Division under the communication ministry is doing the maintenance works of 12.30km of roads of the area to improve the communication system of Bishwa Ijtema spending around Tk 22.5m.
The drainage system of the Ijtema area will also be improved and cleared along with improvement of the road.
The minister said it was expected that the maintenance and improvement work of the roads and drainage system would be completed within January 20.
The first phase of the Bishwa Ijtema would be held from January 24 to 26. The second phase of the Ijtema will be held from January 31 to February 2 with a break of four days.
According to the BRTC, the special buses will operate from Aricha, Paturia, Mirpur, Narsingdi, Narayanganj, Comilla, Bhairab, Kuti Chowmuhani, Brahminbaria, Kishoreganj, Birishiri, Netrokona, Sonapur, Char Jabbar, Laksmipur, Kalmakanda, Madan, Monohardi, Mirkadim, Mohanganj, Akhaura, Mymensingh, Saidabad, Gulistan, Gabtali, Kamlapur, Mahakhali, Azimpur and Joydevpur during the 14 days of Ijtema.
The double-decker buses will also carry passengers from Kakrail Mosque point to Ijtema point.
The buses of BRTC will carry the participants back after the Ijtema’s ‘Akheri Munajat’.
