Auto-rickshaw driver poisoned in capital

A CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver was poisoned by a gang of criminals in the capital’s Airport area earlier on Friday. The deceased was one MdIlias Hossain, 50, a resident of the capital’s Mohammadpur area.

The victim’s brother, Kalim Ullah said Ilias left the house with his auto-rickshaw on Thursday morning. His mobile phone was found to have been switched off since Thursday night.

He said: “Police informed us that my brother was found in a critical condition and had been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where we found him dead.”

He said DMCH sources had told him that locals from Airport had rushed Ilias to the hospital after they found him in his condition.

Kalim Ullah said Ilias’ auto-rickshaw and mobile phone were missing.

DMCH sources said Ilias was admitted their early in the morning in severe medical conditions where he died at around 2pm because of his apparent poisoning.

Airport Police Station Sub-Inspector Abdus Salam said the driver might have been fed something poisonous by a gang of criminals as part of their unique technique of hijacking vehicles.

The SI said policemen were working to find the vehicle and identify the criminals.
