A captain of the national flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines was held with foreign currencies worth Tk 1 million at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday night.
Identified as Shakhwat Hossain, however, was freed after taking a bond from him. But, the currencies have been seized.
Qamrul Hasan, assistant commissioner of the Customs Department, said the Biman captain was held at gate no-6 at 8:30pm when he was on way to Kuwait.
"He is suspected to be involved with a gang of smuggling ring and the currencies of Kuwait were being carried for any of the ring members", said the customs official.
A departmental case was filed in this connection, he said.
It is widely known that a section of officials of different airlines and other agencies at the airport are involved in the smuggling of gold, currencies and other valuables and the incident is the glaring example of it.
Last week, Rab officials arrested another Biman official and a CAAB official with smuggled gold at the capitals Moghbazar and Rampura while 17 officials of the Biman were identified as the suspects in the smuggling of the country’s biggest ever haul of 124 kg gold.
