6 shot as police fire to dispel vandals

Six people were shot after law enforcers opened fire to dispel hartal-supporting vandals in Palashbari upazila, Gaibandha on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident took place during a nationwide anti-polls hartal sponsored by the BNP-led 18-party alliance, days after the 10th parliamentary elections.

Witnesses said hartal supporters vandalised at least 50 vehicles near Sathi Cinema Hall area of the upazila town around 12:30pm.

At one point, they hurled stones at a police vehicle in the area. The law enforcers opened fire at scene. Six people, businessmen in profession, were shot.

Gaibandha police Superintendent Mosharrof Hossain said he heard the news but did not elaborate on the matter.

The injured were Kasir Uddin, 45, Mukul Miah, 50, Delwar Hossain, 45, Sabuz Miah, 22, Parikkhit Chandra Sheel, 35, and Hafizar Rahman, 50.

Kasir Uddin and Parikkhit Sheel were taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. The rest were admitted to local hospitals and clinics.

Gaibandha Chamber of Commerce and Industry demanded deeper insight into the matter and actions against responsible law enforcers.
