Presiding officer hacked in Satkania

Miscreants hacked at the presiding officer of a polling station in Satkania upazila, Chittagong on Sunday afternoon during the 10th parliamentary elections.

At least four others, including policemen, were injured in the attack that occured during a nationwide anti-polls hartal by the BNP-led 18-party alliance.

The assailants hacked at Polling Officer Jamal Uddin, physics assistant professor of Satkania college, had his arms broken, Polling Officer Shipra Nandi said.

Assistant presiding officers Anil Kanti Barua and Najimul Islam and policemen Sub Inspector Tajul Islam and Constable Michil Chandra Das were assaulted.

Tajul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune that nearly 300 people cordoned off North Dhemsa Baruapara Government Primary School sometime around 1pm.

“They began pelting stones from all directions. We opened fire, but our we ran out of ammunition. They barged in and attacked us.”
