Election violence leaves 16 dead

At least 16 people including an Ansar man were killed in 10 districts in separate clashes with law enforcers during voting for the country’s 10th general election on Sunday.

Of the deceased, a Jamaat activist was killed in Jessore, two were killed in Gaibandha, an activist of the Islami Chhatra Shibir died in Chittagong, two BNP men died in Thakurgaon, two including an Ansar man was beaten to death in Dinajpur, two people including a Jubo Dal leader in Feni, an Islami Chhatra Shibir activist in Lakshmipur, two more Islami Chhatra Shibir supporters in Rangpur, two Jamaat-e-Islami men died in Nilphamari and one in Lalmonirhat.

JESSORE: An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed in firing by joint forces at Bazitpur polling centre under Monirampur upazila in Jessore on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Matiar Rahman, 20.

Rezaul Karim, officer in-charge of Monirampur police station said joint forces opened fire on a group of Jamaat activists when they tried to occupy the polling centre at 3:30pm, leaving Matiar dead on the spot.

GAIBANDHA: A leader of Sramik Dal of Gaibandha unit was beaten to death at Kadamtali village of Palashbari upazila on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam, 35, president of Sramik Dal of Gaibandha unit.

Activists of ruling Awami League had beaten him when he went to the polling centre in the afternoon.

He was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at around 6:15pm.

Jaridul Islam, Chairman of Palashbari Union Parishad, confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune about the death.

Earlier, an activist of Shibir was killed and  two others were injured in a clash with the ruling party activists at Monmath Primary School polling center under Bamondanga union of Sundarganj upazila in Gaibandha on Sunday afternoon.

The victim is identified as Sahadul Islam, 28, son of Shaleya Rahman.

Gaibandha Police Super M Shajid Hussain confirmed the death of the Shibir activist to our correspondent. 

CHITTAGONG: An activist of the Islami Chhatra Shibir died during clashes with police while attempting an attack on a polling station in Lohagara upazila, Chittagong on Sunday afternoon.

Police opened fire while the attack was commenced during a nationwide anti-polls hartal of the BNP-led 18-party alliance. The man died on the spot.

Police opened fire at the scene, Lohagara police Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shahjahan said. “The Shibir man died on the spot. The rest fled.”

However, the official could not ascertain the identity of the dead.

THAKURGAON: Two BNP supporters died in clashes with police when opposition supporters attacked a polling station in Thakurgaon Sadar on Sunday during polls.

Several others, including policemen, were injured in the incident which took place during a nationwide anti-polls hartal of the BNP-led 18-party alliance.

About a hundred opposition supporters attacked Basudevpur Government Primary School polling centre in Sadar area around 11:30am, police said.

“They assaulted policemen. The law enforcers were compelled to open fire,” Thakurgaon Sadar police Officer-in-Charge Abdul Mannan told the Dhaka Tribune.

The two dead were BNP supporters Harun, 20, and Joynal, 21, both from Sadar upazila, the official said.

DINAJPUR: Two persons including an Ansar member died in the district on Sunday.

Raihan Masud, 23, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday afternoon.

He was injured in a clash with Ansar members following snatching ballot papers in the morning.

Duty officer of Dinajpur Sadar hospital confirmed about the death.

An Ansar member was beaten to death by miscreants at a polling centre in Parbotipur upazila in Dinajpur on Sunday morning.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Wahed Ali, an Ansar member.

Five polling staff members and a presiding officer were injured in the attack at the polling centre in North Shanonda Primary School around 11am.

Meanwhile, some crude bombs were exploded during the attack.

Confirming about the incident, District Intelligence Officer 1 Rabiul Alam said: “The miscreants are also carrying out explosions in different polling centres.”

FENI: Two opposition supporters died during clashes with police during attack on a polling station in Sonagazi upazila, Feni on Sunday during parliamentary elections.

At least five others, including policemen, were shot during the clash that took place during a nationwide anti-polls hartal of the BNP-led 18-party alliance.

About 600 BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami supporters, armed with sticks, attacked North Charchandia Government Primary School around 10am, police said.

The injured were identified as Sharif, 25, and Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal General Secretary Jamshed Alam, 26.

BNP-Jamaat activists were attacking polling centres since Saturday, Sonagazi police Officer-in-Charge Subhash Chandra told the Dhaka Tribune.

“They opened fire on policemen,” he said. “The law enforcers were compelled to fire back.” Some policemen were injured at scene.

Feni police Superintendent Paritosh Ghosh confirmed one of the death to the Dhaka Tribune. “Six others sustained bullet injuries at scene.”

Feni Sadar Hospital Emergency Medical Officer Mohammad Elias told the Dhaka Tribune that both the bodies were being kept at the hospital.

LAKSHMIPUR:  An Islami Chhatra Shibir activist died when Jamaat men attacked on a polling centre in Ramganj upazila, Lakshmipur on Sunday during parliamentary polls.

Polling in five stations were halted. A policeman was injured while thwarting an attempt to snatch away ballot boxes in Ramganj-1 constituency.

About 20 Jamaat-e-Islami supporters pounced on Masumpur Government Primary School, Lakshmipur police Additional Superintendent Sharif Uddin said.

Law enforcers intervened and clashes ensued, he said. “Both parties resorted to exchange of gunfire.” However, he could not confirm the death news.

Sub Inspector Farhad was injured in the clash that took place, he said. The presiding officer of this polling station had run away.

Ramganj upazila BNP General Secretary Mahbubur Rahman said a shibir activist Rubel died in the clash. His body was being kept in the locality.

Meanwhile, presiding officers said miscreants had snatched away ballots in four other polling stations throughout the upazila. Votes were suspended there.

RANGPUR: Two Islami Chhatra Shibir supporters died during attempt to attack a polling centre in Pirgachha upazila, Rangpur early Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Mirajul Islam, 35, and Hadiuzzaman, 15.

Locals said at least seven others sustained bullet injuries.

The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday ahead of the 10th parliamentary elections when  a group of Jamaat-e-Islami supporters attacked a polling centre in Deuti area under Parul union of the upazila, Pirgachha police station Officer-in-Charge Mokbul Hossain said.

“They opened fire at us. We fired back,” the OC told the Dhaka Tribune. “The deceased are both supporters of Shibir,” he added.

Rangpur Medical College authorities said four injured were taking treatments at the hospital.

NILPHAMARI: Two Jamaat-e-Islami supporters died in separate clashes with law enforcers through Nilphamari on Sunday morning during the 10th general elections.

The incidents took place during a nationwide anti-polls hartal of the BNP-led 18-party alliance. Jamaat is a key ally of the main opposition BNP.

Jamaat supporters attacked a polling centre in Khalishchapari area, Dimla upazila around 9:30am, Dimla police Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Azimuddin said.

Police intervened and clashes ensued. Local Jamaat activist Jahangir Alam, 37, died during the clashes, the police official said.

Around the same time, Jamaat supporters locked in clashes with police during attack on a polling station in Kuriamari Ralipara area, Jaldhaka Upazila.

Momtaz Uddin, 48, died in the clashes that took place there, Nilphamari police Superintendent Jubaidur Rahman said.

Polling through some polling centres through both upazilas were halted momentarily, he told the Dhaka Tribune. Joint forces have been deployed.

LALMONIRHAT: Another BNP man, who was injured during a clash with Awami League supporters in Patgram upazila, Lalmonirhat, succumbed on Sunday morning.

This is the second death of a BNP supporter in the clash that took place on Sunday morning during a nationwide anti-polls hartal of the BNP-led 18-party.

Farooque Hossain, 34, died undergoing treatments at Rangpur Medical College around 7:30am, on-duty doctor Goutam Biswas.

Family and local BNP identified him as an activist of Sechwashebok Dol. However, Patgram police Officer-in-Charge Amiruzzaman could not confirm the death.
