A delegation of the Election Commission informed President Abdul Hamid of its overall preparations for the upcoming 10th parliamentary elections.
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad briefed the media after attending a meeting with the president on Thursday afternoon.
“It is the government’s responsibility to maintain law and order. We have urged the president to try and improve the situation as it stands,” said the CEC.
The EC delegation that included all the election commissioners and the EC secretary led by the CEC went to meet the president at Bangabhaban on Thursday afternoon.
Ahosan, assistant press secretary to the president, told the Dhaka Tribune that the meeting had started at 3:35pm.
“The state of law and order around numerous places has improved, but it needs more work,” he said.
However he said the army is supposed to be deployed until January 9, but it is up to the government whether the date of their deployment will be extended if the situation demands.
He said the president has assured them of extending all possible cooperation to successfully hold the election.
