Juba Dal man dies in Chandpur clashes with BGB

A local leader of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal was killed and 20 others were injured in clashes between blockade supporters of opposition alliance and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members in Chandpur Sadar upazila on Wednesday evening.

The deceased was identified as Faruk Patwary, 32, son of Abdur Razzak Patwari, of Lothergaon village in the upazila.

He was former Juba Dal president of Ward No 7 of Shahmahmudpur union of Sadar upazila.

Police and witnesses said the blockaders of 18-party alliance hurled brick chunks at the border guards and vandalised their vehicle on Chandpur Comilla Highway in Mahamaya Palli Bidyut area in the evening. Later, the BGB men opened fire at the unruly blockaders that triggered a clash. At the time, at least 20 blockade supporters were injured.

Of them, critically injured Faruk was rushed to Chandpur Sadar Hospital where duty-doctor Syed Ahmed declared him dead.

The other injured were admitted to different clinics and hospital in the district town.

Chandpur Police Super Md Amir Zafar said: “Opposition activists pelted brick chips, stones a BGB patrol vehicle on Chandpur Comilla highway while picketing in support of the indefinite blockade enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance. In retaliation, BGB men opened fire to disperse them. During the time, one Faruk Patwari died.”
