Policemen attacked in Dhaka, 7 hurt

At least seven, including four policemen, were injured when crude bombs were hurled at law enforcers in the capital's Mouchak area on Tuesday evening.

The incident took place on the eve of non-stop agitation programme until January 5 elections called by main opposition BNP.

The incident took place in Mouchak area around 6:30pm. Witnesses said the law enforcers fired 50 rounds of gunshot during this time.

Police constable Shahidul Islam, 30, and pedestrians Mofazzal Hossain, 39, and Shafiqul Islam, 20, were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Unidentified criminals hurled 10 crude bombs at the on-duty policemen near Fortune Shopping Mall, Ramna police Officer-in-Charge Mashiur Rahman said.

“The bombs were hurled from a dark place. We are trying to identify and arrest the criminals,” he said.

When asked about the gunfire, the official said police resorted to fire several rounds of blank shots to bring the situation under control at scene.

Main opposition BNP called for continuous blockade until January 5 elections from Wednesday.
