Lawyers of Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association called a strike in all courts of the country for Tuesday protesting “attack at Supreme Court premises.”
The call was made from a press conference held at the apex court premises on Monday afternoon.
“The attack carried out is barbaric,” lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali said. “This attack is like a strike on the judicial system.”
The press conference also called for the formation of a judicial probe into the incident and justice against involved policemen and “terrorists.”
In reaction to the call, Awami League advisory panel member Yusuf Hossain Humayun said such calls were “inappropriate” for lawyers.
“Yesterday's incident is disrespect towards the Supreme Court and a violation of the ethics of practice.”
“Many were wearing black coats yesterday, but many of those were outsiders,” he added.
On Sunday, police tried for hours to quell pro-BNP lawyers at the gates who had brought out a procession in support of the Dhaka March programme.
Afterwards, Awami League supporters barged inside the Supreme Court premises wielding sticks and stones. However, the police stayed outside.
Clashes lasted for almost rest of the day inside the court premises in what was an unprecedented move in the history of Bangladesh.
Even on Monday, clashes took place between Awami League and BNP supporters across the boundaries of the court premises. However, this time the Awami League did not barge in.
