Update : 28 Dec 2013, 07:55 AM

Over 160 people were detained on the third day of crackdown in capital in overnight drive until Saturday morning ahead of BNP's Dhaka March programme.

The joint forces, formed in combination of paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), elite force Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and police, conducted the drive.

The detentions were made from Tejgaon and adjacent industrial area, Mohammadpur, Shyamoli, Adabar, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Farmgate, Kawranbazar and others.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesperson Masudur Rahman said a significant number of detentions were made during the overnight drive until Saturday morning.

The detainees were being verified, he said. The official could not specify how many people were held.

Earlier, more than 170 were held through early hours of Thursday and Friday after the joint forces engaged in the combing operation from Wednesday.

The drive was being conducted ahead of BNP's national flag-wielding Dhaka March programme, slated for Sunday, near their Nayapaltan headquarters.

BNP, who will not be participating in the January 5 polls, has called out to its activists to make the programme “a success defying all barriers.”
