A local leader of ruling Awami League was hacked to death by miscreants in Banshbaria village of the Gangni upazila early on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Nurul Amin, 38, general secretary of Gangni municipality ward no 1 unit of Awami League and son of Nasir Uddin of Banshbaria, reports UNB.

Quoting family members, Officer-in-Charge of Gangni police station Masudul Alam said Nurul was attacked by a group of miscreants near his house at 2am. The criminals hacked him indiscriminately with sharp weapons, killing him on the spot.

He was returning home from Banshbaria Bazar after ending electioneering work for independent candidate Mokbul Hossain for the upcoming January 5 general election, the OC added.

Family members claimed that Nurul was killed out of political vengeance. However, the reason behind the killing has yet to be confirmed.
