Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed said polls will not be held in five districts since all candidates in those districts have won uncontested.
The CEC made the disclosure at a press briefing at the Election Commission Secretariat in the capital’s Agargaon on Sunday.
The districts are Chandpur, Shariatpur, Rajbari, Madaripur and Joypurhat.
“Under such circumstances, army deployment in those five districts depends on the government’s decision,” Rakib informed the journalists.
He also said the law and order committee would decide the exact number of army personnel that will be deployed in each district.
Earlier, a nine member delegation led by MK Alamgir met the CEC and assured him of the government’s assistance in holding the election in a free, fair and credible manner.
The EC set January 5 of next year for the 10th parliamentary polls.
Personnel from the Armed Forces Division will remain deployed from December 26 to January 9 across the country; the EC made the decision on Friday after holding a meeting towards this regard.
