Five injured in Satkhira clashes with joint forces

At least five people, including policemen, were injured when Jamaat-e-Islami supporters locked in clashes with joint forces in Kaliganj upazila, Satkhira.

At least two Islami Chhatra Shibir activist were shot in two separate clashes. Six people were detained from drives in separate areas of the upazila.

Satkhira is known to be a stronghold of the Jamaat. It is one of the listed “vulnerable” districts in the coutry uder crackdown of the joint forces.

Kaliganj police Officer-in-Charge (investigation) Biplab Saha said Jamaat-Shibir tried to fight back during a drive of the joint forces conducted in Kushalia area Saturday night.

Kaliganj police OC Ali Azam Khan and two other constables were injured in stones pelted by the Jamaat-Shibir men, he said.

Shibir activist Ashraful Islam Babu, 21, was detained from the spot with bullet injuries, he said. “He has been taken to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.”

The hospital's on-duty Doctor Abdul Gaffur confirmed the injury and said Babu was taken to operation theatre on Sunday morning.

Satkhira police Additional Superintendent Joydeb Chowdhury said six people were held from drives in Patkelghata, Ashashuni, Kalaroa and Kushalia areas.

“The detained have been charged with sabotage,” he said.

In another clash on Sunday evening, Jamaat activist Masum Billah, 20, received bullet injuries in Debhata upazila. He was admitted at Satkhira Sadar Hospital. On-duty doctor Farhad Jamil said: " Masum has been underwent a surgery."

The joint forces of paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), elite force Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and police are conducting a crackdown in the country in wake of the recent violence.
