Underprivileged street children should be brought under mainstream development programmes by providing them with basic supports including shelter, education and healthcare, speakers at a seminar said yesterday.
If every well-off family comes forward with such supports no children would have to reside on streets, they said and stressed the need for finding out the root causes of being street children.
They were addressing the national dissemination on “Project Experience and Lesson Learned” at the auditorium of YWCA in the city, said a press release.
Bringing Economic Empowerment to Street Children (BEES), a project under the Population Services Training Centre (PSTC)arranged the discussion in cooperation with Stimulating Household Improvements Resulting in Economic Empowerment (SHIREE),Department for International Development (DFID) and Plan Bangladesh.
PSTC executive director FM Mostaque chaired the function while Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare addressed the function as the chief guest.
Freelance Journalist and ex-art editor The Daily Independent Sayeed Lutful Hauque, Program Unit Manager, Dhaka Urban Program Unit of Plan International Bangladesh Abdul Mannan and Advisor of Youth Economic Development (YED) Program of Plan Bangladesh Mohammad Tarequl houque also spoke on the occasion.
