One more bomb making den has been raided at the capital’s Geneva Camp from where more than 100 crude bombs and 1kg of gunpowder has been recovered on Friday afternoon.
The Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members recovered the bombs and the gunpowder within a few hours into an explosion that left two injured, allegedly while they were making bombs at Geneva Camp in Mohammadpur.
The injured Md Shaheen, 35, and Sabbir, 19, were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Shaheen’s condition in particular was stated to be critical.
“They sustained injuries when they had been making bombs at a shanty in the Geneva Camp slum at 2:30pm”, said Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police, Raihan Uddin Khan, also the operation officer of Rab-2.
Speaking with the Dhaka Tribune, the Rab-2 operation officer said, immediately after the explosions, they raided the location and recovered more than 100 bombs and 1kg of gunpowder from the den.
The ASP said the bombs were being made for subversive acts during the hartal and blockade programmes and also for other criminal purposes.
The ASP also added they were trying to arrest the other members of the gang involved in the bomb manufacturing operation.
However, the injured Shaheen claimed he had sustained his injuries as he was passing through the area by rickshaw and the bombs were hurled by unseen criminals.
Shaheen claimed to be a cook by profession and a dweller at a shanty of the slums of Geneva Camp while the injured Sabbir hails from the district of Bhola.
Sabbir claimed he had sustained his injuries while he was standing near a foul market when the bombs suddenly set off.
Sub-inspector Md Sajedul said they rushed to the spot upon being informed and quickly admitted the injured two at DMCH.
The SI said after primary treatment, both Shaheen and Sabbir have been shifted to the Orthopedic Hospital considering the nature of their injuries.
SI Sajedul also said they detained both Shaheen and Sabbir for their involvements in the explosions and kept them admitted to the hospital under police custody.
