Unidentified miscreants set fire to several shops in the Nalta Bazar area under Kaliganj upazila in the Satkhira district early on Friday.
A group of some 20-25 masked miscreants torched the business organisations.
Sources said Nolta Union BNP President Rafiqul Islam Khokon and some local Jamaat-e-Islami leaders claimed Jubo and Chhatra League cadres attacked the shops with hockey stick and torched them.
Kaliganj police station Officer-in-charge Biplob Saha said: “Combined forces and fire brigade members rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.”
“Police are investigating the matter to identify the culprits involved in the incident,” he said.
