Inu: Indira Gandhi mid-wife of independence

Update : 18 Dec 2013, 07:50 AM

Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu on Wednesday said late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is the “mid-wife” of independence of Bangladesh.

“If Bangabandhu is the father of the nation, Indira Gandhi is the mid-wife of our independence,” he told the media after a meeting with Indian journalists.

“Indira Gandhi’s firmness helped Bangladesh for victory,” he said adding reference to the contribution of Indian government, army and its people.

Inu sat in discussions with a seven-member panel of visiting Indian journalists. He later briefed media.

On the note of sharing waters between India and Bangladesh, Inu called upon India for a joint sharing system for the betterment of the poor.

“It has to be seen that the water becomes a symbol of good luck for the people instead of a bane,” he said.

The Indian journalists, visiting Dhaka upon invitation of Bangladesh-India Chamber of Commerce and Industries, met Inu at his office on a courtesy call.

Indian press to be invited for polls-coverage

A team of the Indian press will arrive upon invitation from the Bangladesh government for coverage of the January 5 national elections, Inu said.

The visiting delegation will report the current situation of the country. Inu said he made a call to prepare the report after a thorough fieldwork.

Regarding the press in Bangladesh, Inu said he upheld the liberty of information flow for the media.
