Two vehicles torched in Chandpur

Two vehicles were set ablaze in Kachua upazila, Chandpur Sunday morning, during a nationwide hartal of the Jamaat-e-Islami and a regional strike of Jatiya Party.

Jamaat supporters blocked a road in Khajuria area around 7am, Chan Mia, driver of a passenger bus set on fire at the scene, said.

“About 12 Jamaat-Shibir men came on board and looted valuables from passengers,” he said. “Later, they brought down everyone and set the bus on fire.”

A pick-up van was also set on fire at scene, he said.

Meanwhile, shutdown supporters blocked Chandpur-Lakshmipur road at several points with logs in Gachtala and Bagadi area.

Chandpur police Superintendent Mohammad Amir Zafar said three people were detained from separate areas during picketing.

Jamaat were observing a nationwide strike protesting the execution of their leader, “Butcher of Mirpur,” Abdul Quader Molla.

And, Jatiya Party were observing a strike in Chandpur alleging that their Chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad was arrested for the sake of treatments.
