Awami League to win 127 seats uncontested

Update : 14 Dec 2013, 09:48 AM

There will be no need for elections in at least 151 constituencies for the upcoming general polls because of polls-boycott by the main opposition BNP.

The statistics came up on Saturday after the Election Commission prepared primary list for the parliamentary seats of the January 5 national elections.

The last date for withdrawing nomination papers was December 13.

Now, it appears, that Awami League will win 127 constituencies uncontested among the 300 parliamentary seats available.

Hussein Muhammad Ershad's Jatiya Party has bagged 18 while Rashed Khan Menon's Workers' Party of Bangladesh two and Hasanul Huq Inu's Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dol has bagged three constituencies.

Anwar Hossain Manju's Jatiya Party has bagged one constituency uncontested.

The general elections are expected to be held on January 5, until now, without the participation of the main opposition BNP.

However, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said “everything is possible” if BNP and Awami League can reach a consensus over the elections.

Under mediation of United Nations' Assistant Secretary General Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, Awami League and BNP have begun a dialogue for consensus.
