Beyonce surprises fans by releasing self titled album

Update : 13 Dec 2013, 06:29 PM

Surprise! Friday the 13th proved to be a lucky day for Beyoncé fans, with the unexpected release of a new album. The 32-year-old singer released her self-titled fifth album on iTunes early Friday, with no announcement beforehand.

The “visual album” features 14 songs and 17 videos, with collaborators such as Frank Ocean, Drake, her husband Jay Z and their daughter Blue Ivy, who turns 2 in January.

“I see music,” the Texas native said about the album’s visual element. “It’s more than just what I hear.”

“When I’m connected to something, I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies. And they’re all connected to the music,” she said.

The videos were shot mainly during her Mrs Carter Show World Tour in locations such as New York City, her native Houston, Paris, Sydney and Rio de Janeiro. Beyoncé said the surprise release gave her the opportunity “to speak directly” to her fans.

“There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans,” she said in a statement.

“I felt like I didn’t want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.”
