The execution of “the Butcher of Mirpur,” Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Molla now awaits an order from the Government of Bangladesh.
Inspector General (prisons) Mainuddin Khandaker told the Dhaka Tribune that he has received the court order dismissing review petition of Quader Molla Thursday afternoon.
“Now the execution of Quader Molla awaits an order of the government,” he said.
Article 20(3) of the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act says that implementation of a verdict under this law would require an order from the government.
Earlier in the day, the full bench of the Appellate Division, Supreme Court, dismissed the review petition on the death sentence of Quader Molla.
By dismissal of this review, there are no further barriers to the execution of Quader Molla, authorities had said.
Nor would Quader Molla be allowed for any further chances to seek the clemency of President Abdul Hamid, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said.
The copies were sent to to Dhaka Central Jail, Ministry of Home Affairs, the Attorney General, defense counsel of Quader Molla and the International Crimes Tribunal.
Supreme Court Registrar AKM Shamsul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune that the copies were sent around 3:20pm.
Inspector General (prisons) Mainuddin Khandaker told the media that he had the copy of the court order in his hands around 4:55pm.
Law advisor to the prime minister Shafique Ahmed, junior Home Minister Shamsul Haque Tuku, junior Law Minister Quamrul Islam and the Attorney General sat in a meeting after Quader Molla's review was dismissed.
The ministers did not speak to the media after the meeting.
The execution of Quader Molla, which has already been deferred once, now awaits a fresh order from the Home Ministry.
