Continuing the trend of sequel and remakes, the Walt Disney Studios and the Anil Kapoor Film Company are partnering to produce Khoobsoorat, a story of an exuberant, vivacious and fun girl who turns the lives of a royal family upside down.
The film, directed by Shashank Ghosh and Produced by Anil and Rhea Kajoor, is a modern day spin on the 1980 Hrishikesh Mukherjee comedy-drama, and will star Sonam Kapoor in the lead.
Khoobsoorat’s ensemble cast includes Kirron Kher, Ratna Pathak Shah and Amir Raza Hussain, with rumors linking Pakistani actor Fawad Khan as Ms. Kapoor’s lead. The actor, however, could not be reached for a comment confirming this.
“For a long time now we were looking for a script with Disney’s values and we’re happy to have found that in Khoobsurat” said Rucha Pathak, Senior Creative Director, Studios, Disney UTV.
“We are so excited to bring you Khoobsurat with Disney India. Shashank’s take on the film is unexpected, colourful and fun, everything you find in your favorite Disney movie” added producer Rhea Kapoor.
The original Khubsoorat won the Film Fare for Best Film and Best Actress in 1981, and starred Rekha and Rakesh Roshan, along with Dina Pathak Shah and Ashok Kumar.
The film is currently being shot in Bikaner, Rajasthan, and will be released by mid-2014.
