CEC: EC won’t be liable for one-sided polls

Update : 05 Dec 2013, 05:20 PM

It is the political parties which will remain responsible for a 'one-sided' poll, not the Election Commission, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed said.

The CEC made the statement while speaking to journalists at the commission offices this afternoon.

“To ensure participation of all parties in the elections, they [political parties] are to take it as their responsibility to reach a consensus,” he said.

Asked about Jatiya party’s latest decision, the CEC said: “It is absolutely their party matter.”

He said the commission will make a decision in accord with laws and the constitution.

A day after the announcement of boycotting the upcoming elections, Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Wednesday urged JP ministers to resign from the cabinet.

The 10th general elections are to be held on January 5 next year.

The main opposition BNP-led alliance rejected the poll schedule and announced to observe a number of agitation programmes till their demand of caretaker government system is met.
