Bangladesh Athletic Federation has decided to hold the 38th edition of national athletics in the first week of February next year. The previous meet was held in February 2012.
The federation has already sent invitations to different districts, divisions and services teams for the three day meet. “We have taken the decision to hold the national meet in the first week of February and after that, the national junior meet will also be held. We are yet to finalise the date but hope to host it a month after the national meet,” said Tofazzal Hossain, the acting general secretary of the federation.
A total of 600 athletes from 81 organisations participated in their quest to win 41 gold medals in the last edition of the meet and on that occasion the federation provided cash rewards to the participants for the first time. The gold, silver and bronze medalists received Tk2,000, Tk1,000 and Tk500 respectively.
Last edition’s sponsors Walton Group have provided Tk300,000 of the Tk1m meet, while co-sponsors National Credit and Commerce Bank and Reflection Holdings Ltd delivered Tk150,000 and 100,000 respectively
Meanwhile, it was also learnt that the athletic federation has selected former national athlete Khurshida Khatun to accomplish a one year long track and field training course provided by Germany National Athletic Federation. The papers await the approval of the ministry.
