Sabotage: Trains derail in Jessore, Chandpur

Wednesday began with a series of railway sabotage in areas of the country during a blockade programme of the BNP-led 18-party alliance.

At least three people died and 30 were injured when a train veered off the tracks after miscreants removed fishplates in Gaibandha early in the day.

The death toll in the incident may rise.

Similar derailments were also reported from Chandpur and Jessore. However, there was no major injuries reported from those events.

Fishplates removed, train derails in Chandpur

Three carriages including the engine of inter-city Meghna Express derailed in Shahtali area derailed in Shahtali area after fishplates were removed.

The incident took place during a hartal in Chandpur, in protest to death of two activists, and a nationwide blockade of the 18-party alliance.

The train was moving slowly, therefore none of the about 500 passengers sustained serious injuries, driver AK Niyaji said.

Because of the derailment, Laksham-Chandpur railway communication remained suspended from 6am.

Tracks uprooted, train derails in Jessore

Khulna was snapped from rest of the country after a commuter train derailed after blockaders uprooted railway tracks in Nawapara town, Jessore early Wednesday.

No serious injuries were reported in the incident that took place in Begerdanga area, Nawapara Railway Station Master Shovon Roy told Dhaka Tribune.

Three to four carriages of a passenger-train derailed, he said. “Khulna rail communication is totally down.”

Railway communication has been a key target during and ahead of hartals and blockades.
