Pro-opposition professionals yesterday handed over a memorandum to Supreme Court Registrar AKM Shamsul Islam demanding a stop to police remand against journalists, lawyers and human rights activists.
They want it placed before Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain, who they said could take steps to halt such remands as he was the head of judiciary.
They also demanded that administrative steps be taken to hear the case pending at the High Court for the reopening of the daily Amar Desh.
In the memo, the professionals mentioned the remand orders of the lower court against two journalists of Rtv; BNP leaders Moudud Ahmed, Rafiqul Islam Miah, and Shimul Biswas; Amar Desh Editor Mahmudur Rahman; Sangram Editor Abul Asad; and Odhikar Secretary Adilur Rahman Khan.
The professionals were Zainul Abedin, BNP chairperson’s adviser; Shaukat Mahmood, BNP chairperson’s adviser; Sanaullah Miah, party mass education secretary; Ruhul Amin Gazi, president of BFUJ and chief reporter of the daily Sangram; Abdul Hai Shikdar, president of a faction of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ); Jahangir Alam Prodhan, secretary of DUJ.
