Three people were killed and five others injured as a truck fell into a roadside ditch on the Bagerhat-Khulna highway at Srighat in sadar upazila of the district early on Tuesday, reports UNB.
The deceased were identified as Mostafa Sheikh, 45, son of Hakim Sheikh of Madur Kathi village, Saidul Sheikh, 45, son of Azizur Rahman Sheikh alias Dhalu of Hoglapasha village in Morelganj upazila, and Hanif Mollah, 25, son of Kalu Mollah of Porgula in Pirojpur sadar upazila. Suvash Chandra Dam, sub-inspector of Bagerhat Model police station, said the accident took place in the area around 4:30am when the truck loaded with vegetables veered off the road and fell into an adjacent ditch, leaving the three vegetable traders dead on the spot and five others injured. The injured were admitted to the district hospital in a critical condition. The SI, quoting the injured, said the accident occurred as the driver was driving drowsily despite their repeated warnings. However, the driver and his helper managed to flee the scene after the accident. On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to the district hospital morgue for an autopsy. A case was filed in this connection.
