Police van torched, 10 injured in Rajshahi

At least 10 people, including a policeman, were injured when blockade supporters clashed with law enforcers in the court area of Rajshahi city Monday morning.

A police van was set on fire at scene, police said.

Clashes ensued in the area when police intervened a stick-brandishing procession in support of the on-going nationwide blockade of the 18-party alliance at around 8:30am.

Witnesses said blockade supporters pelted stones at police. At least 10 people were injured at scene.

Several rounds of rubber bullets were fired and teargas shells were lobbed, Boalia circle police Assistant Commissioner Saifur Rahman said.

A constable was injured during this time, he said. “Police will not allow any sort of untoward activities for the sake of the people.”

Meanwhile, witnesses said of a tense stand-off between blockade supporters and police in Kajla area of the city earlier in the morning.
