A driver of Chandpur-bound ‘Meghna Express’ was injured as the blockade supporters hurled stones targeting the train when it reached at Barabkunda area in Sitakunda upazila Saturday evening.

Driver Mohammad Jalal, 45, was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Station Master Motilal Barua said the driver had received injuries on his face and head.

Meanwhile, the protesters also attempted to stop rail communication between Chittagong with the other districts of the country by setting the railway track on fire pouring petrol in the same area, railway sources said.

However, Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Nirapatta Bahini (RNB) members dispersed them from the railway tracks, said Syed Yiasin Faruk, officer-in-charge of GRP outpost in Chittagong Railway Station.

AA Shamsul Alam, station manager of Chittagong Railway Station, told Dhaka Tribune that the train left the Chittagong city at around 5:30pm while protesters started hurling stones targeting the train when it reached at the area at around 7:30pm, leaving its driver injured.

He said the train was kept in Sitakunda station for half an hour as another driver was replaced in the place of Jalal, he said.

After half an hour the train started running, added the station manager.
