Writ seeks cancellation of polls-schedule

Update : 30 Nov 2013, 10:52 AM

A writ petition was filed on Saturday with the High Court seeking directive to cancel the schedule of the parliamentary elections.

Petitioner Eunus Ali Akond demanded the cancellation of the election schedule as it was declared before the dissolution of the parliament.

The cabinet secretary, law secretary, chief election commissioner and election commission secretary were made respondents to the writ petition.

“The writ was filed as the Appellate Division in its verdict, that scrapped the caretaker government system, gave a directive to dissolve the parliament 42 days before the general elections,” he said.

The Supreme Court verdict says, “in case of holding the general elections, at the discretion of parliament, parliament should be dissolved at a reasonable time before the polls; the period may be 42 days.”

The petitioner, on November 24, also lodged a writ petition seeking directive of the High Court to the prime minister to advise the president so that he could dissolve the parliament 42 days before the tenth parliamentary polls.

As per the schedule, the upcoming tenth national elections will be held on January 5.
