'Shibir man' dead in Jhenaidah clash

An activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir died and 10 more were injured when police opened fire during clashes in Kotchandpur upazila of Jhenaidah on Saturday.

Local unit of the opposition called a daylong hartal in two upazilas for Sunday in protest against the death.

The incident took place during a fresh spell of 72-hour blockade programme called by BNP-led opposition 18-party alliance.

The deceased was identified as Israil Hossain, 23, a local activist of Jamaat-e-Islami's student wing, police said.

Kotchandpur circle police Assistant Superintendent Jahidul Islam said police were compelled to open live gunfire to bring situation under control.

Kotchandpur upazila BNP President Sirajul Islam Siraj called daylong hartal in Kotchandpur and Moheshpur upazilas for Sunday in protest to the death.
