BRTC bus torched in Mirpur

Update : 29 Nov 2013, 08:45 AM

An articulated bus of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) was set on fire in front of Bangla College in the capital's Mirpur, Friday afternoon.

The incident occurs while the BNP-led 18-party alliance was offering Gayebana Janaza for those who were killed during the blockade-related violence.

Meanwhile, Hefazat-e-Islam is staging a countrywide agitation programme to press home their demands.

Confirming the incident, Imtiyaz Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Mirpur Division, said unidentified criminals had set the government owned articulated bus while it was crossing the area at around 1pm.

“No casualties were reported as the bus was almost empty,” the DC said and added, "We are yet not sure of whether opposition members had involved with the arson incident."

He said they could not reach the bus's driver or his helper for further details regarding the incident as their mobile phones were switched off since the occurrence.

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune regarding the driver and helper, the DC said: "We are also trying to verify whether they had any links with the arson attack."

Selim Miah of the Fire Service and Civil Defence said: “On information, two firefighter units rushed to the scene and doused the fire.”

The incident occurred a day after a teenager was killed, and 18 others suffered serious burn injuries after a bus was set ablaze by miscreants in the capital’s Matsha Bhaban area.
