Police disrupt sabotage attempt in Chandpur

Update : 27 Nov 2013, 07:59 AM

Police disrupted a sabotage attempt in Chandpur town on Wednesday morning during a 48-hour nationwide blockade by the opposition 18-party alliance.

Pickets tried to set fire to railway tracks in the Mission Road area around 9am, police said.

“They began pelting stones when we chased them,” Chandpur Model police Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Morshed said.

The pickets retaliated by pelting stones before breaking away after police lobbed teargas shells, he added.

Witnesses said a police van was vandalised at the scene and at least 10 people were injured.

Meanwhile, 12 opposition activists were detained while picketing in the district, Chandpur police Superintendent Mohammad Amir Zafar said.

Trains in the district were compelled to halt after miscreants removed railway line clippers in the town late on Tuesday night.

However, the damage was repaired and trains resumed after four hours.
