Zafar Iqbal, Yasmeen Haque resign from SUST

Update : 26 Nov 2013, 12:26 PM

Professor Muhammad Zafar Iqbal on Tuesday resigned from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).

He resigned from his post as professor of Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

His wife Dr Yasmeen Haque has also resigned from her post as physics professor from the same university.

Dr Yasmeen confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune that  they resigned because of the dispute over the admission system at SUST.

She added: "This is the time for us to move away from SUST."

They submitted their resignations after a meeting on Tuesday regarding the ongoing admission issues at SUST.

The meeting has decided to postpone the integrated admission tests between SUST and JSTU, a cause Professor Iqbal has strongly been advocating for.

Over the last two and half months, the examination committee had been preparing the procedures for the integrated admission, claiming it will reduce harassment of the examinees. However, last week, a group called ‘Sylhetbashi’ protested against the integrated admission test, claiming this system would cause injustice to the people of Sylhet, and demanding 50% quota for students of Sylhet.

University authorities on Monday sat with distinguish persons of Sylhet to discuss the matter, and on Tuesday decided to postpone the test.
