Ministers given time to leave official houses

Update : 24 Nov 2013, 06:52 PM

The outgoing ministers and state ministers who already resigned from their posts will get a one-month duration to leave quarters allocated for them as cabinet members of the government.

Meanwhile, none of the newly-appointed ministers and state ministers has requisitioned any official residences which are allotted by the Department of Public Accommodation (DPA) under the Housing and Public Works Ministry.

The cabinet division on Sunday issued a letter to the ministry asking it to ready some living quarters for the new ministers.

Dr Ashraful Islam, director of the DPA, told the Dhaka Tribune they were yet to get any message from the outgoing ministers who will leave their official residences.

He said the ministers will get a one-month duration to vacate their houses.

In reply to whether the DPA will ask any ministers or state ministers to leave their government quarters, Ashraful Islam said, “We have no plan like this. The ministers will hand those accommodation over to the Public Works Department – supervising authority of official residences of the ministers.”

The accommodation will be renovated immediately after they left it and then be allocated to the new ministers, he said.

Asked if any of the newly appointed ministers requisitioned an accommodation, the DPA director, also a joint secretary to the civil administration, said none of them had requested yet.

“We are waiting to get their request,” said Ashraful.

The cabinet division on Sunday issued a letter to the Public Works Ministry requesting it to get ready some quarters for allocating those to the new ministers, said a source in the cabinet.

Kazi Nishat Rasul, a senior assistant secretary to the cabinet division, signed the letter.

But Dr Ashraf on Sunday said he was yet to get any letter from the cabinet division.

According to the Public Works Ministry, former primary and mass education minister Afsarul Ameen, state minister for primary Motaher Hossain, fisheries and livestock minister Abdul Latif Bishwas and food minister Abdur Razzaque have already left their official houses.

Earlier on Thursday, the cabinet division issued two different orders vacating 30 posts of ministers and state ministers and reshuffling the offices of 20 existing ministers and state ministers.

The newly-appointed eight ministers and state ministers were entrusted with portfolios on the same day.
