Update : 23 Nov 2013, 08:05 PM

Speakers at a function in Gaibandha stressed the need for large-scale production of biogas to ease energy burden of the country and ensure a healthy environment.

Biogas can provide a clean and renewable alternative to traditional, environmentally harmful sources of energy – such as firewood and fossil fuels – they observed, adding that the beauty of biogas energy plants lies in their use of organic matters and waste materials and cost-effectiveness.

They made the comments while addressing a daylong programme on biogas held at the office of local awareness organisation Sinnomul Mohila Samity (SMS).

Practical Action Bangladesh (PAB) and SMS jointly organised the meeting as part of an agricultural research project funded by Unicef and UKAID.

Deputy Commissioner M Zahurul Islam Rhohel addressed the meeting as the chief guest while Vice-president of Gaibandha Press Club Sarker M Shahiduzzaman was present as the special guest.

Among others, SMS Executive Director Morshedur Rahman, PAB Project Manager Mahbubul Islam and journalist Asaduzzaman Mamun also spoke.

In his speech, Zahurul Islam said the initiative to produce biogas through a combined waste management system was an “epoch-making” one and hoped it would go a way to improving the municipality’s environment.

Earlier, the details of the project, which started in November 2011, were presented by project officer Swapon Kumar Mali.
