A five-member probe panel was formed and asked to report within the next three working days on the cracks appearing at a multi-story Gazipur factory.
The factory was declared shut for three days.
Gazipur Additional Deputy Commissioner Shahnawaz Dilruba Khan visited the scene after a workers' demonstration on Saturday morning and then formed the committee.
The committee, headed by UNO Fouzia Rahman, has been formed with representatives from BUET, Gazipur City Corporation, Ministry of Public Works and BGMEA.
Earlier garment the workers of SS Sweaters refrained from work after cracks appeared in their factory.
Witnesses said large cracks appeared in the sixth and seventh floors of the seven-story Chaity Complex located in Sataish Darail of Gazipura area.
Workers allege factory authorities forced them to continue operating in the morning. They refused and began demonstrations at around 8am, continuing for about three hours.
One worker of the factory, Juel, alleged that the factory owner was asking the workers to get back to work. “We will not go inside. We fear for our lives.”
The cracks were said to have been spotted in the walls on Thursday last week. But the authorities were said to have paid no heed.
Dhaka Tribune could not reach the authority of the factory despite repeated attempts.
Tongi police Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam Azad said the workers were striking in fear of those cracks. “The owner has been told to resume operation after getting the cracks checked by engineers.”
The nine-story Rana Plaza building collapsed a day after cracks appeared in its structure. Over a thousand died in the incident which was the biggest building collapse disaster of recent times.
