3 injured as bus cylinder blasts

Update : 22 Nov 2013, 03:28 PM

At least three passengers of a bus sustained injuries when its gas cylinder exploded in the capital’s Zero Point near the General Post Office (GPO) area Friday evening.

The bus initially caught fire due to a machinery fault, and then exploded.

Two children and an elderly woman sustained injuries from the fire, said Golam Sarwar, officer-in-charge of Paltan police station.

Anisur Rahman of the Fire Service and Civil Defence said the fire originated in the bus around 5:15pm when its engine got overheated.

On information, fire fighters rushed to the spot and tried to put the fire out, he said.

Witnesses said two children and a woman suffered wounds as they were late in escaping the fire.

According to witnesses, the fire engulfed the entire bus within minutes and, at one stage, its gas cylinder exploded with a big bang after it came in touch with the fire.

Local people rescued the injured children and woman, but their identities and latest condition could not be known immediately, as they neither were rushed to medical care nor could police trace their locations.
