Rafiqul islam, one of the two main contributors to ascertain 21st February as world mother language day died at Vancouver on Wednesday.
The freedom fighter of Bangladesh capitulated to leukemia at 63. He had been suffering over the last two years, his family informed.
While confirming this sad news to Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN AKA Momen said, “He had been living in Canada for last 18 years but his heart rested on Bangladesh eternally.”
Rafiqul was born at Comilla’s Rajbari. He, along with his mate Abdus Salam, set up the voluntary organization called language lovers of the world. They raised the issue of recognizing 21st February as mother language day by Unicef.
After the duo’s valiant efforts Unesco granted the proposal on 17th November 1999.
