Hasina 'allowed' to lead polls-time govt

Update : 20 Nov 2013, 02:00 PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said she has been granted permission by the president to lead the polls-time government.

President Hamid has granted her the permission, she said on Wednesday evening during the 19th session of 9th Parliament.

Stating that elections must be held within 90 days ahead of the end of her government’s tenure, the premier said: “Election is nearing. I already met with the president and discussed about the preparations for election.”

“He asked me to take responsibility of conducting the polls-time government. He has given me the permission.”

She added that her government is doing the job of sustaining the constitution and, in turn, democracy.

She again pleaded the opposition chief Khaleda to join the election and carry forward the democracy and political stability of the nation.

On October 18, PM Hasina gave a formula for all-party polls-time government. The new polls-time cabinet took oath on Monday, although main opposition chief Khaleda Zia had rejected the formula.

On October 26, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina phoned BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and invited her for dinner at Ganabhaban for October 28 to initiate dialogue over the polls-time government; but the opposition leader had then rejected the offer saying she could not accept the invitation due to the upcoming 60-hour-hartal.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday phoned BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and invited her for dinner at Ganabhaban on Monday to initiate dialogue over the polls-time government; but the opposition leader said she could not accept Monday’s invitation due to hartal.    However, Khaleda said she could make it after the 60-hour countrywide hartal ending Tuesday if she got a fresh invitation. - See more at: http://www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/2013/oct/26/khaleda-join-dialogue-after-hartal#sthash.iBVssWmH.dpuf

On Tuesday, the opposition chief met with president Abdul Hamid at his residence a day after the new cabinet was sworn in. During the meeting, she requested the president to initiate dialogue to settle the dispute regarding polls-time government.
