Update : 20 Nov 2013, 01:44 PM

Two 12-year-olds, a boy and a girl, were killed in separate accidents in the capital on Wednesday.

The 12-year-old daughter of a security guard was killed when a wood-log fell on her from a building under construction in the capital’s Tejkunipara, while a slum boy was crushed under the wheels of a carelessly-driven pickup van in Uttara.

The girl was Mariam, daughter of Security Guard Md Khokan Miah at an under-construction building of Zakir Enterprze and Developers Ltd, while the boy was named Md Nuruzzaman, of a slum on Beribadh (Dam) in Uttara.

Khokan Miah said a wooden log fell on his daughter from the third floor of the under-construction multi-storey building at around 10:30am when the child was playing on the road.

Sub-inspector Mujibur Rahman of Tejgaon Police Station said she was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital soon after the incident, where she died at 1:30pm.

Mariam had been residing in a tent inside the construction site along with her parents for the last eight months.

Meanwhile, 12-year-old Nuruzzaman died on the spot when a pick-up van sped away after crushing him under its wheels as the boy was crossing the road during the early hours of Wednesday.

Nuruzzaman, who hailed from Palashpur in Narsinghdi district, had been residing at a shanty in the slum along with his mother since his father passed away a few years ago.

Saidul Islam, sub-inspector of Uttara East Police Station, said they recovered the body and sent it to the morgue for autopsy.
