A 12-year-old boy died when a newly-built wall collapsed on him at East Jurain in the capital on Tuesday evening.
Md Rabbi, a class-2 student of a local school, was playing on the rooftop of a building where the wall was recently built as part of an extension.
The boy’s father, Abdul Mannan, a rickshaw puller, said Rabbi often went to the building to visit his elder brother, Liton, who is a mason worker.
“Liton lives with his family on the ground floor of the one-and-a-half storey building. On the roof, the houseowner recently built two rooms. Rabbi was playing on the roof near a newly-constructed wall,” Mannan said.
“Suddenly, the wall collapsed and bricks fell on him as Rabbi tried to climb it,” he added.
Liton and the houseowner’s son, Nayeem, took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Rabbi’s parents, brothers and sisters had thronged the emergency unit and his father fainted several times as doctors fought to save his son.
Police sent the body to the hospital’s morgue for autopsy.
