Members of Islami Chhatra Shibir and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) clashed following an examination at Chittagong University.
Witnesses said students were seen waiting outside after their exam ended at 12pm when AL-affiliate BCL members attacked members of Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, who were handing out leaflets on campus.
A clash ensued and five crude bombs were set off, witnesses said.
Police sources have said law enforcers then fired blank shots to calm the situation down.
Follwoing the incident, BCL men have taken position at Shahjalal Hall and the Shibir men are stationed at Suhrawardy Hall.
Both the BCL and the Shibir activists were armed.
BCL activists were locked in a clash with police since they had obstructed the BCL men from entering Shah Amanat Hall while armed.
BCL leaders hurled brick chips and stones on the law enforcers who were provoked into retaliating by deploying teargas shells and 20 rounds of rubber bullets.
Police raided the hall after dispersing the activists.
The situation on campus is currently at a standstill.
