45 RMG unions demand Tk6,000 minimum wage

The leaders of 45 unions of readymade garment have demanded Tk6,000 as minimum wage for the workers.

They placed the demand to the minimum wage board chairman AK Roy on Sunday, urging the board to reconsider the already settled amount Tk5,300 and set it at Tk6,000 excluding food allowance.

Although the demand was placed on behalf of 45 trade unions, the representatives of 29 were present.

Meanwhile, on prime minister’s direction, the RMG owners and a section of workers’ unions have accepted the wage board proposal of Tk5,300 as minimum wage.

The wage board would finalise Tk5,300 as minimum wage for RMG workers on the November 21 meeting.

“We demand Tk6,000. Board will decide on the issue,” said Abul Hossain, President of Textile Garments Workers Federation.

He said the board chief assured us of considering our demand and discussing with other board members at the next meeting.

“The amount will be finalised with the consent of the owners and workers’ representatives,” added Abul Hossain quoting the board chairman.

The organisations also demanded to consider entry level workers as assistant machine operators. Demand for two festival bonuses of basic salary was also made.

Demands also include 10% increment instead of the proposed 5% for workers of all grades.

As per their demands, the minimum wage for the sweater factory workers must be not less than that of the sixth grade while the wage for per unit have to be declared within three days of starting production.

The leaders of the organisations staged demonstration in front the of the wage board office at Topkhana Road in the capital on Sunday while placing their demands.

During the demonstration, they alleged that the government officials were influenced by the owners.

“We want Tk6,000 as minimum wage excluding food allowance,” said Md Touhidur Rahman, President of Bangladesh Poshak Shilpa Smramik Federation.

As per their recommendation, of the minimum wage Tk6,000, Tk4,000 will be as basic, Tk1,600 as house rent and Tk400 as medical allowance.

Food allowance has not been included in the basic salary.

On November 4, the minimum wage board headed by AK Roy proposed Tk5,300.
